Pyeongchang Winter Olympics on Marble of Pyeongchang
I created the following three pieces of artwork as a personal project on the topic of the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang of Korea. Fond of working on natural objects as materials and subjects, I have expressed this special event taking place in Pyeongchang in 2018 through the natural object of Pyeongchang.

평창동계올림픽을 주제로 개인 프로젝트를 진행하여 아래와 같은 세 장의 아트워크를 만들었습니다. 저는 주로 자연물을 소재이자 주제로 작업합니다. 2018년 평창에서 일어나는 특별한 이벤트를 평창의 자연물로 표현해 보았습니다
Explanation of work During the 2018 Winter Olympics, there are numerous matches on the ground of Pyeongchang. I utilized stone of Pyeongchang to express the game scenes of PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
Beautiful marble called 'Pyeongchang Seok' is produced in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province. ('Seok' means stone in Korean.) It is a colorful marble mixed with pink, bluish gray, white and black. Such a splendid stone was embraced in an extensive but plain landscape of Pyeongchang.
This is the time to show a new side of PyeongChang in the Republic of Korea that the world has not known. The dramatic moments that will be presented in 17 days from February 9 to 25, 2018 were put on series of three art posters. In the beautiful patterns and swirls of Pyeongchang marble, skiers run steep mountains, figure skaters show off beautiful performances, and bobsleigh slides down fast.

작품 설명 2018 동계올림픽 기간 동안 강원도 평창의 땅 위에서 수많은 경기가 치러집니다. 평창의 경기 장면을 평창의 돌을 사용하여 표현했습니다. 강원도 평창에서는 ‘평창석(石)’이라고 불리는 아름다운 대리석이 생산됩니다. 분홍, 청회색, 흰색, 검정이 어우러진 컬러풀하고 화려한 대리석입니다. 평창은 아름답지만 수수한 자연 풍경 속에 이렇게나 화려한 돌을 품고 있었습니다. 이제 동계올림픽을 통해 전 세계가 알지 못했던 대한민국 평창의 새로운 모습을 보여줄 시간입니다. 2018년 2월 9일부터 25일까지 17일간 펼쳐질 드라마틱한 순간들을 3장의 시리즈 포스터에 담았습니다. 평창 대리석의 아름다운 무늬와 소용돌이 속에서 스키 선수들은 가파른 산을 질주하고 피겨스케이팅 선수가 아름다운 연기를 선보이며 봅슬레이는 빠르게 미끄러져 내려옵니다.
Idea development I intended to find something unique to Pyeongchang that was not found in other parts of the world, and I wanted to use it to create artwork. This is because I thought that I could complete the design different from other Olympics so far in only that way.
I started to investigate the characteristics of Pyeongchang, local attractions, and specialty products. Pyeongchang has a beautiful natural landscape, but I thought that there are a lot of regions in Korea with similar scenery, and it is difficult to see that the flora and fauna representing Pyeongchang is unique to Pyeongchang because it is a species that lives not only in Korea but also in foreign countries.
In the meantime, I came to know that the mineral resource reserves of Gangwon-do province account for 70% of Korea and it is a report of mineral resources of Korea where various rare mineral resources are buried. I searched for rare minerals in Pyeongchang, but I did not. Alternatively, I came up with a marble instead. I thought If there were any marble produced in PyeongChang, it could definitely be Pyeongchang's unique asset.
Marble is colored and patterned according to the type and amount of metal incorporated. This is why marbles all over the world have different patterns and colors in the same name 'marble' and it is difficult to find identical type of marble in other area due to different stone and soil quality of each region.
Luckily, I was able to get marble of Pyeongchang called 'Pyeongchang Seok' through the company that develops Pyeongchang's rocky mountain. The Pyeongchang marble which I saw directly was very colorful and splashy, so it seemed to be able to produce the scenes of the Winter Olympics dramatically. Furthermore, rather than repeating certain patterns, all the parts were mixed with different patterns, making it easy to produce various scenes of the Olympic Games.

아이디어 도출 과정 다른 나라에는 없는, 다른 지역에는 없는 평창 고유의 어떤 것을 찾으려고 했고 그것을 사용해서 아트워크를 만들고자 했습니다.그렇게 해야 지금까지의 해외올림픽. 서울올림픽과는 차별화되는 디자인이 완성될 수 있다고 생각했기 때문입니다.
저는 평창이라는 지역의 특징, 관광명소, 특산품 등을 조사하기 시작했습니다. 평창에는 아름다운 자연경관이 있으나 비슷한 풍경을 가진 한국의 지역이 많다는 생각이 들었고 강원도 평창을 대표하는 동식물들도 한국뿐만 아니라 외국에도 서식하는 종이라서 평창 고유의 것이라고 보기 어려웠습니다.
그러던 중 강원도의 광물자원 매장량이 국내의 70% 차지하며 다양한 희귀광물 자원이 매장되어 있는 한국의 광물자원의 보고라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 혹시 희귀광물 중 평창에서만 나는 것이 있는지 찾아보았지만 그렇지는 않았고 대신 대리석이 떠올랐습니다. 만약 평창에서 생산되는 대리석이 있다면 그것은 분명 평창이라는 지역 고유의 자산이 될 수 있다고 생각했습니다.
대리석은 혼입된 금속 성분의 종류와 양에 따라 색과 무늬가 결정됩니다. 이것이 전 세계에 대리석이라는 동일한 이름으로 각기 다른 무늬와 색상의 다양한 돌들이 존재하는 이유이고 각 지역의 석질, 토질은 모두 다르기 때문에 같은 형태의 대리석을 다른 지역에서 찾기 어렵습니다.
다행히 평창의 석산을 개발하는 업체를 통해 ‘평창석’이라고 불리는 평창의 대리석을 구할 수 있었습니다. 직접 본 평창 대리석은 아주 컬러풀하고 화려해서 동계올림픽의 장면을 드라마틱하게 연출할 수 있을 것 같았습니다. 그리고 특정 무늬가 반복되기보다는 부분 부분 모두 다른 무늬가 혼재되어 있어 올림픽의 다양한 장면을 연출하기에 용이했습니다.

Skiing on the Pyeongchang-marble
To represent alpine skiing that descends rapidly from the vast mountain, a person was expressed as small, and I created five representative players of the Oita League, like the Olympic symbol. For creating skiers, the same marble pattern was used to match the background pattern.
평창석(石) 위에서의 스키
광대한 산에서 빠르게 내려오는 알파인 스키를 표현하기 위해 사람은 작게 표현했습니다. 올림픽의 상징인 오륜처럼 오대주의 대표하는 5명의 선수를 만들었습니다.
Figure skating on the Pyeongchang-marble
In order to express the dreamy scene of figure skating, a sport with artistry, I selected marble with white spots like clouds and increased the saturation to look more impressive.
평창석(石) 위에서의 피겨 스케이팅
예술성이 가미된 스포츠인 피겨스케이팅의 한 장면을 표현하기 위해 구름 같은 흰 반점이 있는 대리석을 선택했습니다. 스케이트선수들은 배경의 무늬와 어우러지도록 같은 대리석 무늬를 이용하여 표현했습니다.
Bobsleigh on the Pyeongchang-marble
To represent the sliding track, I chose marble with thick dark stripes. The bobsleigh sled was difficult to represent with only the silhouette of the marble pattern. So I expressed the feeling of carving stone marble. The number 023 on the bobsleigh represents the 23rd Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang.
평창석(石) 위에서의 봅슬레이
슬라이딩 트랙을 표현하기 위해 굵고 어두운 줄무늬가 있는 대리석을 선택하여 작업했습니다. 봅슬레이 썰매는 대리석의 무늬로 만든 실루엣만으로 표현하기 어려웠습니다. 그래서 대리석 돌을 조각한 느낌으로 표현하였습니다. 봅슬레이 위의 023이라는 숫자는 23번째 올림픽인 평창동계올림픽을 나타냅니다.
